Denmark
temp. Sweyn (Svend) I Forkbeard Penny ND (986-1014) MS64 NGC, Uncertain mint (possibly Lund), Hildebrand-342, SCBI VII (Copenhagen)-222 (same reverse die), SCBI XX (Mack)-912 (same reverse die), Dolley & Butler, "Some 'Northern' Variants, etc. of the 'CRUX' Issue of Æthelræd II" (British Numismatic Journal Vol. 30, no. 18 1960), Plate XVIII, 609 (same dies), Malmer-Die Chain 101, Dies 15/1075. 1.82gm. +ÆĐERED REX ΛNGLO (NG ligate), draped, bareheaded bust of Aethelred II left, scepter held before / +ΛRNCyTIL M-O EOFR, small cross pattée. An intriguing emission from this Scandinavian king who became the first Danish ruler of England, though he is not known to have minted any issues in his own name. Struck from official dies of the moneyer Arnketill taken from the York mint, muling Aethelred II's Crux type obverse with an Intermediate Small Cross reverse, Malmer has assigned these dies to a southern group, likely minted at Lund in Denmark, or possibly Sigtuna in Sweden. Apparently one of 5 examples known from this die pairing according to Blackburn, this type is supposed to be among the earliest of the Danish imitative Anglo-Saxon series, probably not extending beyond the death of Sweyn Forkbeard in 1014.
