PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy VI Philometor. Second sole reign, 163-145 BC. AR Didrachm (20.5mm, 6.66 g, 1h). Uncertain mint in Cyprus. Dated year 117 of an uncertain era (146/5 BC). Diademed bust of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis around neck / Eagle with closed wings, standing left on thunderbolt; P-IZ across field, Є between legs. Svoronos 1227; SNG Copenhagen 562. Toned, minor pitting, small flan crack. VF. Rare.

From the Ken Bressett Collection.

See C. Lorber, "The Ptolemaic era coinage revisited," NC (2007), pp. 105-117, for an updated discussion of this interesting type. Although this issue has traditionally been assigned to Arados, Lorber argues for a Cypriot mint, and for a starting date of 262/1 BC for the civic era dated on the coins.
