GREAT BRITAIN. Pound, (160)0. London Mint; mm: O. Elizabeth I. PCGS AU-55.
S-2534; Fr-214; N-2008. Sixth issue. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust left, wearing ruffled collar; Reverse: Garnished square-topped coat-of-arms; crown above. A coin that immediately harkens back to the Elizabethan Age of England--a golden epoch in the history of Britain, the legacy of which still impacts the world today. Among the most demanded of English coins, and a type where the desire to own an example far outstrips the supply offered, this Pound would make a highlight in even the strongest of collections. Many representations of this type suffer from the common afflictions of tooling, repair, or usage in jewelry and, as such, this piece distinguishes itself by avoiding these pitfalls. The strike is commendably strong, with a handsome portrait of Elizabeth, with the legends crisp and fully on the flan. Pale golden color near the center is brightened by swatches of simmering orange toning tucked in the legends that encircle the monarch. Very faint evidence of wearing is seen on the highest of elements, though these are somewhat blended with a touch of strike softness near the center. A laudable example, and one that is certain to engender many feelings of giddy in all those who profess partiality to coins of the British series.
