Impressive Midwestern Periodical
Andrus, D.A.K. [publisher]. THE CURIOSITY HUNTER. Volume I, Nos. 1 and 4, and Volume V, Nos. 1-3 (Rockford, Illinois, September and December 1872, and October-December 1877. 8vo, self-covered or with original printed paper covers, as published. December 1872 with detached covers; other issues generally near fine. Bourne 1870-9. A very rare publication. This group includes the first and final issues. Andrus billed himself as an "importer and dealer in cards, medals, shells, minerals, fossils, autographs and curiosities." His publication reflects these interests, and more, but the content leans heavily towards numismatics. Many interesting articles, correspondence and tidbits feature numismatic information probably not available elsewhere. The October 1877 issue features a separately printed gilt rendition of the Washington before Boston medal that is pretty impressive for a publication of this sort and at this time. According to Crawford, no Volume III was published. Crawford 524. Ex M. Bourne Library.
