Extensive Group of William Brown Lists
Brown, Wm. P. [publisher]. KURIOSITI KABINET / THE CURIOSITY CABINET. Twenty-seven issues, being: Volume I, Nos. 1-2 (New York, September-October 1870); Volume II, Nos. 2-11 (January 1873-October 1877); Volume III, Nos. 1-7 and 9 (July 1879-September 1886 and 1887); Volume IV, Nos. 1-2 (1889-1890) and 6-8 (1894-1897); and Whole Nos. 57-58 (both 1897). All single sheets folded in half as published to make four-page issues. Occasional chips and tears; most issues very good or better. Bourne 1870-1 and 1870-12. One of the more unusual periodicals of the 19th-century numismatic scene, the early issues of Brown's publication featured a front page of text in phonetic English, a system of presentation which he felt was of use to those learning the language. While he eventually gave this up after a dozen issues, he reintroduced the publication as The Curiosity Cabinet in 1873 and continued to publish it occasionally through the late 1890s. For a brief period in 1886 (Volume III, Nos. 6-8), it was published by Scott Stamp & Coin Company, who had hired Brown to manage their Coin & Curiosity Department. Attinelli 110. Crawford 612. Ex M. Bourne Library.
