CHINA--EMPIRE. The Imperial Bank of China. 10 Taels, 1898. P-A42a. PMG About Uncirculated 50.
(S/M#C293-4b). Printed by BFL. Peking. A highly important note, and the first we can recall handling publicly for this type. Just nine examples are listed on PMG's population report, with auction results being few & far between. The front of the note displays a dark blue border design with a gold undertint. The underprint and seal at top center are in a red-orange color, while the bank name, serial number, and other information is in black ink. A similar design and color scheme is on the reverse, except in Chinese whereas the front is in English. This type, when offered publicly, is typically in lower grades, and this About Uncirculated note is sure to pique the interest of collectors of Chinese Empire paper money. PMG comments "Rust". PMG Pop 1/3 Finer.
Estimate: $10000 - $15000
