Republic silver Pattern 8 Reales 1882 Ho-JA, Hermosillo mint, KM-Pn136var., Buttrey p.259, Specimen 64 PCGS. An issue of mysterious origin, with a design that almost identically parallels that of the William Wyon engraved Guanajuato 8 Reales patterns (KM-Pn10/12) that were produced in 1826 and 1827 at the Royal Mint in London, but this production dates well after his lifetime. The design itself is nothing short of a visual masterpiece, and should entice nearly any collector of Crown-sized type, with the cap and rays theme executed to artistic perfection, one ray overlapping the other to give a multi-dimensional feel. Likewise, the eagle and snake are illustrated in impeccable detail, with each feather being clearly defined - even the cactus on which the eagle is perched shows an unusual care of execution! Given the special nature of this piece, it should not be surprising that it shows evidence of careful preservation. The tone exemplifies originality with varied multicolored hues atop reflective mirror-like fields and no post-strike contact is visible. The only fault of note, one out of the previous caretakers' hands, is a faint touch of central incompleteness that presents itself as bluntness on the caps highest point. While mentioned to be accurate, we find no reason to consider it a concern. A classic piece, one of likely no more than 10 extant in this metal, and a coin that deserves special consideration.

Estimate: 10000-15000 USD
