Ferdinand VI Pillar 8 Reales 1752 LM-J, KM55.1, AU58 NGC. The first year of the Pillar type for the Lima mint and a rare date with examples seldom making their way to market. The present example however is a cut above most, and among the finest known, with smooth abrasion-free surfaces that hold attractive cabinet patina that deepens toward the edges and only the barest trace of friction that is most apparent on the left globe. While of little visual relevance, the specialist should find the extremely late reverse die state quite interesting, as a number of die cracks (as struck) can be seen radiating out from the central shield. Ex. Emilio Ortiz Collection, UBS auction #27, 1991, lot 199 where it sold for 7500 Swiss Francs. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $1000 in VF, $2000 in EF.
Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
