17th-century London Trade Tokens
Burn, Jacob Henry. A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF THE LONDON TRADERS, TAVERN, AND COFFEE-HOUSE TOKENS CURRENT IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY; PRESENTED TO THE CORPORATION LIBRARY BY HENRY BENJAMIN HANBURY BEAUFOY. London, 1855. Second edition. 8vo, original embossed brown cloth, both sides paneled in blind; spine ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait; xcv, (1), 287, (1) pages; text illustration; 3 additional engraved plates, the last hand-tinted. Intermittent spotting, as usual. Very good or better. The best edition of this interesting work, in above-average condition. Includes an interesting exposition on the "London half-penny" and its varieties (i.e., the London, Carolina, and New England Elephant tokens). Burn notes that "nothing certain appears to be known in reference to its original purpose." Of the Carolina and New England pieces, he observes: "These are both very scarce, more particularly the former, and belong to the class of Anglo-American coins." The collection was apparently formed by Francis Hobler, who donated the collection in Beaufoy's name. Clain-Stefanelli 13873. Manville 392.

Estimate: 150 USD
