Rare Illustrated Album of Japanese Coins
Tokuno Ryosuke. 大日本 貨幣精圖 [DAI NIPPON KAHEI SEIZU]. Tokyo: Ministry of Finance Printing Bureau, 1878. First edition. Oblong folio [28 by 38 cm], original black quarter roan; spine lettered in gilt. Printed title leaf; 54 plates depicting 190 Japanese coins or ingots beautifully reproduced in gold, silver and bronze tints. Binding extremities somewhat worn; internally fine. A rare and impressive work, with striking illustrations. Tokuno Ryosuke was the head of the Ministry of Finance Printing Bureau and was behind the push to modernize the Japanese economic system. He worked with the Italian printer and bank note engraver Edoardo Chiossone, who introduced modern bank note printing to Japan and who was almost certainly involved with the production of this work. Ex J.O. Spencer with printed library label. Coole *J46. Ex Kolbe Sale 100, lot 92.

Estimate: 300 USD
