Twelve issues, complete, bound in one volume. Edited by John Gilmary Shea. 8vo, contemporary marbled boards rebacked in modern tan leather with contemporary spine decorations and lettering affixed. iv, 384 pages; frontispiece engraving. One issue with closed tear to margins; very good. Important for the inclusion of a three-page version of Charles I. Bushnell's "An Historical Account of the First Three Business Tokens Issued in the City of New York" illustrated with cuts of the Motts token and two Talbot, Allum and Lee tokens. Also includes an article on the die varieties of 1793 cents, one of the earliest on the subject, and other numismatic content. The Historical Magazine was an early source of numismatic information, and is mentioned in the "Introductory" of the first issue of the American Journal of Numismatics as being one of the primary American sources for information on coins. It featured articles by a number of prominent numismatists, reviewed numismatic books and reported on the various societies. Attinelli 109.
