Hodges' Coin Chart Manual
Hodges, Daniel M. HODGES' GOLD AND SILVER COIN CHART MANUAL. SUPPLEMENTARY TO THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE AND BANK REPORTER, AND BANK NOTE SAFEGUARD. ... CONTAINING BY FAR THE LARGEST NUMBER OF FAC SIMILES OF GOLD AND SILVER COINS, OF ANY PUBLICATION IN THE WORLD. New York, undated [c. 1858]. 8vo, original printed paper covers. 48 pages; illustrated throughout with woodcuts of U.S. and foreign coins. Contemporary ownership writing on front wrap ("Ruth & Co."). Only lightly worn, a few dog-ears. Very good or better, housed in archival folder. A scarce early coin chart manual, clearly based on Dye's Gold and Silver Coin Chart Manual. While the relationship between the two firms is uncertain, it seems difficult to believe that plagiarism was involved, as the coins seem almost certainly to be from the same woodcuts and are largely in the same arrangement: I suspect a legitimate business arrangement was behind this. Ex David F. Fanning Numismatic Literature, Auction II, lot 191; ex Michael Sullivan Library.

Estimate: 100 USD
