Rare Thompson Bank Note List
Thompson Brothers, Bankers. BANK NOTE DESCRIPTIVE LIST, SUPPLEMENTARY TO THOMPSON'S BANK NOTE & COMMERCIAL REPORTER, CONTAINING ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS OF ALL THE GENUINE BANK NOTES, ISSUED BY THE BANKS IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA. New York: Published by Chas. Blondell, 117 Franklin Street, 1860. Thirteenth Edition. 8vo, later tan linen-backed blue boards; printed spine labels; original printed paper covers bound in. 84 pages; woodcut of a $1.00 note of the Bank of Chemung, Elmira, New York, at the head of the third page; engravings of the various State Arms throughout the text. Original paper covers with marginal repairs; a bit chipped, soiled and worn, with the top portion of some leaves slightly stained; some check-marks in the text. Good to very good, in a well-preserved modern binding. Dillistin pages 142-144. A rare publication, missing from the Champa, Bass, Ford and Newman Libraries. We offered a copy of the 1864 22nd edition in our Sale 116; otherwise, this is the only copy of any edition that we have handled. This particular edition was apparently unknown to Dillistin; he notes that the "earliest copy discovered is dated 1859," and next cites the 1861 14th edition. The work's raison d'tre is stated in the introduction: "The large and increasing amount of Spurious and Altered Bank Notes, with which the country has been flooded of late, has induced us to publish this work as an aid to ÔTHOMPSON'S BANK NOTE AND COMMERCIAL REPORTER' in suppressing the circulation of Spurious and Altered notes, by giving a description of all the Genuine bills of the Banks in the United States and Canada." A most interesting publication, issued near the end of the State Bank Note era. Ex Kolbe Sale 84, lot 636, and since bound; ex Michael Sullivan Library.

Estimate: 300 USD
