Woodward, W. Elliot [catalogued by William H. Strobridge]. CATALOGUE OF COINS, MEDALS AND TOKENS ... BRIC-A-BRAC ... INDIAN ANTIQUITIES ... A LARGE AND VALUABLE COLLECTION OF PRESSED FLOWERS AND PLANTS.... New York: Leavitt, February 23-26, 1874. 85, (3) pages; 1852 lots. Hand-priced in ink. [bound with] Strobridge, William H. CATALOGUE OF THE ENTIRE CABINET OF ANTIQUE, MEDIEVAL AND MODERN COINS, MEDALS AND JETONS, FOR MANY YEARS KNOWN AND CELEBRATED AS THE GROUX COLLECTION, NOW THE PROPERTY OF A LADY IN WASHINGTON. New York, April 7-9, 1874. iv, (3)-57, (1) pages; 1173 lots. Hand-priced in ink. Two catalogues bound in one volume 8vo, contemporary black quarter calf; spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt; original printed paper covers bound in. Binding rubbed; very good or better. Adams 18 in the Woodward series (though catalogued by Strobridge) and Adams 17 in the Strobridge series. The Woodward sale features very important colonials, Clay's Isle of Man collection (again), important Washingtonia and excellent special-edition Woodward catalogues. Adams rated A in colonials, literature and British, and B+ overall. Attinelli 68. Strobridge's introduction to the Groux sale borders on the poetic and is well worth reading: "The ÔGroux Collection,' which has had a name in American numismatology for the last quarter of a century, is now before the public, with the veil removed. ... The fond old dreamer whose name it bears has himself passed away, and the fate that befalleth all collections is about to come also upon the one with which he had freely mingled his very life." Ex S.H. & H. Chapman's sale of March 6-7, 1894, lot 957, where it was purchased by Ed Frossard for 25 cents on commission (of 5 cents) for an unknown bidder, who recorded this information on the rear pastedown; ex Charles Davis's sale of May 7, 2005, lot 144; ex Cardinal Collection Library.

Estimate: 150 USD
