He's wearing armour, on top of which there's a cloak, fixed over the right shoulder, where one could vaguely distinguish part of a lion's head.

Catarina, turned to the right, with her head adorned by pearls, and a curl falling to each side of the neck. The dress, low-cut and very simple and fixed over the right shoulder by a broach, has a plain and light cloak over it.
Bibliography: Van Loon, op cit, II, p. 471, no. 1 (plate); Medallic Illustrations, I, p. 489, no. 111 (description); Lamas: Medalhas dedicadas à Infanta D. Catarina, fig. 2.ª (plate). According to "Medallic Illustrations", loc. cit., this medal was made by John Roettier, comemmorating the marriage of D. Catarina, and it's perhaps the celebrated Golden medal, since it was coined in gold, and perpetuated in verse by Waller. The original dies are in the British Museum.
