The first crescent-marked coins bear the regnal year 5, either to denote their intended circulation on the Malabar Coast or, as seems likely, that they were struck at the Company's factory in Tellicherry, which is known to have coined a vast number of lesser-quality fanams. Coins with the fixed regnal year 9 are, principally on stylistic grounds, most likely to be products of Tellicherry
