This extremely rare variety of the iconic 19th century design is one of the rarest variants of the coveted "Una and the Lion", which is described in the literature as a pattern striking. The English authors Wilson and Rasmussen have dealt with the various varieties of this 5-Pound piece in their work. The specimen offered here with a plain edge and 11 leaves has received the highest rarity rating - R7 in their work. It can be assumed that only very few examples of this pattern were ever produced. According to the research of Wilson and Rasmussen and their attested rarity indication R7, it is probably safe to assume only less than 5 pieces were minted at all.
The die cutter of this unusual and attractive gold coin was William Wyon. He came from a family of well-known medalists who served the British royal family for more than a hundred years. The son of a stamp cutter and medalist, William learned the skills in his youth. When his uncle, Thomas Wyon, was appointed chief die cutter at the British Mint in 1816, young William was given the post of his uncle's deputy on the recommendation of Sir Thomas Lawrence. William Wyon's greatest artistic triumph will always be associated with the coins and medals he created after the accession of the young 18-year-old Victoria. No other artist was equally successful in combining youthful charm with excellent die cutting. His portrait of the queen with tiara, which he cut for his Guildhall medal in 1837, was the model for the first postage stamps. However, the most famous and impressive production was the 5 Pound piece "Una and the Lion".
19世紀を代表するコインのうち、造られた数はそう多くない「ウナとライオン」、そのなかでも更に希少なこのバリエーションは資料によるとパターンと記されている。英国の著者ウィルソンとラスムッセンは自身の著書の中で様々なバリエーションのこの５ポンドを扱っている。プレーン・エッジに１１枚の葉をあしらったこのロットはこの本の中で最も希少なR7と記されている。ウィルソンとラスムッセンの研究によるとR7は造幣数が５枚未満の場合に与えられる。
このコインのスタンプ師、ウィリアム・ワイオンは何代も王室にメダル師として仕えた家系の出身で、同じスタンプ師、メダル師である父親に幼いころから技術を学んだ。王立造幣局の筆頭スタンプ師であったウィリアムの叔父、トーマス・ワイオンは、サー・トーマス・ローレンスの推薦もあり若かったウィリアムを自身の代理役に指名した。ウィリアムの芸術家としての最大の功績は常に戴冠直後の18歳のヴィクトリアの肖像と密接に関わっている。ことヴィクトリアの若い魅力の表現と美しいスタンプ技術の共存においてウィリアムは他の芸術家の追随を許さない。１８３７年にウィリアムが完成させた、ティアラを纏った女王の肖像画は元々切手の為に作られた。しかしながら最も有名な肖像画はやはり５ポンドの肖像画、ウナとライオンであろう。
