Charles I silver "Giles Strangways" Medal 1648 MS62 NGC, MI-33-177, Eimer-153. 62mm. By. J. Roettiers. Struck after the Stuart Restoration. Obv. Draped bust right. Rev. Tower of London flying Royal Standard, sun bursting from cloud above. Midnight silver surfaces with flame-lit devices adorn this supremely attractive specimen, while trivial scattered scratches limit the assigned grade. Strangways was imprisoned in the Tower of London for 2-1/2 years, partly as a hostage for his father, both of whom supported the Royalist side in the English Civil War. Strangways served as MP for Dorset throughout most of the 1660s and early 1670s. Certainly a prize for any British historical collector. From the Abbeygate Collection of British Medals
