George III gold "Sir William Browne Award" Medal 1765 MS61 NGC, BHM-92, Eimer-711. 36mm. 24.83gm. Edge: W.H. Jacques, 1891. By L. Pingo. Obv. Draped bust of Sir William Browne with an inscription surrounding. Rev. Seated Apollo crowning a kneeling figure with a laurel wreath. The finely struck, illustrative devices on this stunning specimen are encased by fields that were likely once fully reflective, but which have been diminished by friction. According to Peck, this gold medal was awarded annually from 1774 for Greek and Latin studies. William Browne (1692-1774) was a physician and president of the College of Physicians in London.
