Coins and Paper Currency from Colonial Asia are extremely popular today. Paper Currency from the early 19th century is almost unknown in the collecting world, as so few units were issued and nothing short of a miracle was needed to prevent them from being redeemed or lost over the following centuries. This incredible group is a complete denomination set of Riijksdaalders notes, each in almost improbable condition. Notice the duo of languages and the plethora of signatures on each. At the time of cataloging, each of these notes are the first and only examples graded in the PMG Population Report. These notes were issued during the Napoleonic Wars, and they were actively redeemed in stages within a few years of issue. Additionally, it is reported that fewer than 2000 pieces were issued for each denomination, and much less in some instances. Low serial numbers are seen on each note in this set. For accuracy, PMG mentions mounting remnants, notations, and ink bleed. The rarity and historical importance of this group cannot be overstated. Each issued denomination is included in this lot, and it is highly unlikely that any of these notes could be sourced or found again. The Bataviasche Koloniale Courant, Java Government Gazette and Bataviasche Courant is a source that detailed some of the history of these banknotes, with regard to the colony at the time of French Influence around the globe during the Napoleonic Wars. Javanese records are surprisingly intact and can further illuminate the context where these gigantic notes would have circulated. Simply outstanding, important, and museum-quality in all respects.
