MACEDON. Argilos. Circa 495-470 BC. Stater (Silver, 26 mm, 12.74 g). Pegasos with curved wing standing to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square diagonally divided, with central dotted circle and stippled surfaces. Dewing 1081. HPM 7a. Liampi -, but see pl. 26. Traité II 1212. Extremely rare, being one of just seven known examples, all seemingly engraved by the same hand. Void of sharp details as made and as is also the case with all other known examples, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

The Greek polis of Argilos was situated somewhat inland from the coast along the banks of the Strymon River and near to Amphipolis. Although originally a member of the Delian league, due to Athenian support of Amphipolis, Argilos supported the Spartans under Brasidas during his Chalkidian expedition in 424. The heraldic device of Argilos appears to have been the Pegasos, which appears on all of it's coinage.
