Great Britain - Gothic crown 1847, Silver, VICTORIA 1837–1901 Gothic type. Crowned bust left. Rev. four crowned shields forming a cross.S. 3883; ESC 2571.Being known as the gothic crown due to its medieval revival features, this design was the work of the royal mint engraver William Wyon and designer William Dyce. Although nowadays hailed as a masterpiece, the coin proved to be remarkably unpopular among the British population on the account of its archaic lettering, unusual visual symbolism, and crowded design. The London Times did not exaggerate by much in describing the crown as ''an old institution of long-standing unpopularity.'' It was not until after the Victoria era that numismatists became more appreciative of the design as well as the staggering level of thought that went into making it. This ultimately led to a reissuing of the gothic crown in 2021 by the Royal mint.28.36 g. UNDECIMO on edge. RR A solid example of this scarce and coveted type. NGC PF61
