HISTORIEPENNIGEN - HISTORICAL MEDALS - VOYAGE OF THE ADELHAIDE TO NEW YORK 1808 Three-masted vessel 'Adelhaide' seen from behind, inscribed with the ship's name on the stern, flying Dutch flag NEW YORK. Rev. naked Mercury standing facing with pouch and caduceus. Date 1808 engraved on parcel to the left.Unfortunately, preciously little is know about the voyage of the Adelhaide. Although, admittedly, an account has been located which makes a fleeting reference to a Danish ship renamed the Adelhaide as a trophy ship for king George III (r. 1760-1820), no other allusions to this mysterious three-masted vessel have been found. Nonetheless, this piece is masterfully crafted and its enigmatic origins adds to its desirability.Finely engraved AR with engrailed edge. 68.9 mm. 38.99 g. Unique!
