James II, The Spanish Wreck Recovered, 1687, uniface impression in steel (?) of the obverse of the medal by George Bower, conjoined busts of James II and Mary to r., he laureate, the top leaf of the wreath points to the gap between the stop after MAG. and the B of BRI, 48.5mm. (MI.619/33; MH.71; Betts 67), from a rust-marked die, very fine and very rare
The medal commemorates the success of Sir William Phipp's expedition to recover bullion from the wreck of the Concepcion off the coast of St. Domingo. This is the obverse for the slightly smaller variety (its reverse would have shown clouds in the sky). It is believed these smaller medals were those struck for those immediately involved in the expedition. The larger size being made for grander presentations by the King and other worthies.
