The Stamp Act of 1765 authorised a tax on American colonists and caused much grievance. It was repealed the following year by the British government, as a matter of expediency but it had already given rise to the colonists' slogan 'No Taxation Without Representation'. Ultimately it began the chain of events that led to American independence.
