The Countess devoted her life to good causes always linked to Methodism. An early act was helping with the foundation of the Foundling Hospital. Through her friendship with the preacher George Whitefield she became interested Native Americans and enslaved Africans in the American Colonies. On his death she inherited his estates in Georgia and South Carolina and a school, the Bethesda Home for Boys, becoming a slave owner herself. Her influence extended to many Colonies.
