The attribution of this enigmatic coin to the wider region of south-eastern Italy and not to Beneventum, as previously suggested, is based firstly on the absence of any mention of the lyre in previous catalogue descriptions and secondly on the absence of the legend on the reverse. These elements are not consistent with the types of Beneventum. However, the V on the reverse is found on coins of Larinum (cf. HN Italy 626-628, unfortunately its meaning is unclear), and the traces of the ethnic underneath the exergue on Bertolami's example also suggests a tentative attribution to Larinum. Nevertheless, the similarity of the obverse to that of The Brettii (cf. SNG ANS 1) casts doubt on this attribution, requiring a broader possibility of an attribution across the whole area of south-eastern Italy.
