Hobler, Francis. RECORDS OF ROMAN HISTORY, FROM CNÆUS POMPEIUS TO TIBERIUS CONSTANTINUS, AS EXHIBITED ON THE ROMAN COINS COLLECTED BY FRANCIS HOBLER. Westminster: John Bowyer Nichols and Sons, 1860. Two volumes. Large 4to, original blind-stamped brown cloth, gilt. xi, (1), 398 + (2), (399)–862 pages; original mounted albumen print depicting a numismatically themed allegorical engraving; text illustrations. Spine of first volume nearly split; second volume spine worn; some loose signatures. Good. One of the earliest numismatic works to employ photography, although only the frontispiece is photographic. The author was "formerly Secretary of the Numismatic Society of London." In the introduction he notes: "My experience in Roman coins was very limited when I made the observation-that probably every one has made and will make under similar circumstances-namely, that, starting with the rude and heavy As, and following the series of Coins leading up to the fine types that commence with the reign of Augustus, thence tracing the series down again to the small and badly-executed Coins which make their appearance in the time of Gallienus, we have, from an artistic point of view, an epitome of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire."
