Ceylon 18.6.1936 P-26s PMG Extremely Fine 40 50 Rupees (Specimen)

Seldom offered in any grade, this expedient specimen (where a regular note is taken and turned into a specimen, typically identifiable by a regular serial number) is one of very few examples of this type available to collectors in any form. Records indicate that 50,000 notes of this date were printed, but the majority of these were redeemed and survivors are rare. This type was introduced in 1929 and was printed with six different dates, of which this is the second to last. The total output of all dates of this type was a mere 300,000, which when it comes to banknote issuance, is a minuscule number. A survey of publicly available auction records shows virtually no offerings of this type in either specimen or issued form in the past ten years. As such, this offering represents an extremely infrequent opportunity to acquire a 50 Rupees from Ceylon in pleasing condition. At some point in its life the note was attached to a sheet of paper with a paperclip, which rusted and caused some staining, but this is a minimal distraction really only visible from the back. The pastel colors are vibrant, and the offering eye-appeal is excellent. We note that strong embossing confirms the originality of this piece. The first we have offered and an extremely rare opportunity for the specialist. PMG mentions "Minor rust".
