JULIUS CAESAR. AR Denarius (3.89 gms), Military Mint traveling with Caesar, 49 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 2/5 Surface: 5/5.
Cr-443/1; CRI-9; Syd-1006; RSC-49. Obverse: Elephant advancing right, trampling upon horned serpent; Reverse: Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex. A bit conservatively graded with respect to its strike designation, this example admittedly presents some off-centering of strike upon each side, though this aspect is relatively ubiquitous with the type. Otherwise, it is largely unhandled, of good style, pleasingly toned, and even yields some brilliance in the protected areas.
Estimate: $750 - $1500
