GREAT BRITAIN. Pound, 1643. Oxford Mint; mm: Plumes. Charles I. PCGS EF-45.
S-2938; KM-238.2; N-2397 (VR); Brooker-863; Morrison dies-A/2. Declaration type. Obverse: Large portrait of Charles on horseback, of fine workmanship holding sword and reins, riding horse trotting left; plume to right, pile of arms below; Reverse: Declaration in two lines between two parallel lines; three plumes above. Produced from donated silver plate during the tumultuous first years of the English Civil War and the withdrawal of Charles I to Oxford, these elusive issues are the largest hammered British types ever produced and a consistent source of collector demand due to their impressive physical characteristics, rarity, and historical significance. The present example is exceptional even for the type, boasting deeply toned surfaces of remarkable originality, and with nary a detracting mark or issue to speak of. The large-sized portrait of Charles I depicted upon this particular variety is easily the most artistic and lifelike within the short-lived series, and the full strike allows much detail to remain despite evidence of circulation. The only example currently recorded in the PCGS census, and certainly one of the finer specimens extant.
From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection. Collector envelopes with attribution notes included.
Estimate: $40000 - $60000
