Livilla, wife of Drusus, dupondius struck by Tiberius, 22-23, PIETAS, diademed and veiled bust of Livilla as Pietas right, rev., DRVSVS CAESAR TI AVGVSTI F TR POT ITER around large S C, 14.80g (RIC 43; BMC 98; Vagi vol. II, 477 and vol. I, p. 127), extremely fine with a brown Tiber patina, an exceptional example with no traces of tooling, very rare as such Ex Morton & Eden, 119, 6 December 2022, lot 73 (unpaid purchase); Nelson Bunker Hunt collection, Sotheby's New York, 21-22 June 1990, lot 670; and Bank Leu 28, 1981, lot 370 (as Livia). There are just three Imperial bronze issues in the name of Drusus, Tiberius's son and his intended heir: the sestertius depicting the twin sons Tiberius and Germanicus Gemellus, the dupondius as here, depicting his wife Livilla as Pietas (but given to Livia in RIC, BMC and Cohen) and the as with Drusus's own portrait (i.e. RIC 42, 43 and 45). The present coin is one of the finest known.
