Ionian Islands, Venetian Authority (Septinsular Republic), 1800-1807. 5 Gazette, 1801, Garitsa (in Corfu) mint, variety with denomination in Greek, edge with a chain-pattern (21.25g, 31mm, 12h). ΕΠΤΑΝΗΣΟΣ ΠΟΛΙΤΕΙΑ *, stylised Lion holding shield with arrows. / *5* ΓΑΖΕΤΑΙΣ -1801-, in three lines, denomination and date within circled wreath (KM2; Lambros 7).

Attractive brown patina with sharp strike but weakness at points, extremely rare and historically fascinating.

This coin comes from an issue of three copper coin denominations (1-5-10 Gazettes), minted in Corfu to facilitate money exchange during the very short period (1800-1807) of semi-independence of the Ionian Islands, guaranteed by Russia, Turkey and Allies. The example offered here is of the first type (out of three) with the denomination on the reverse in Greek. Missing from most Ionian Islands collections.

Graded AU Details, Reverse Scratched NGC.
