Akragas war eine dorische Gründung. Von Beginn an prägte die Stadt - wie die meisten griechischen Städte Siziliens - im euböisch-attischen Fuß. Der Adler ist der heilige Vogel des Zeus, der Krebs symbolisiert den namengebenden Flussgott Akragas.
Akragas was founded by the Dorians. From the beginning, the city – like most Greek cities in Sicily – minted its coinage based on the Euboean-Attic standard. The eagle is the sacred bird of Zeus, while the crab symbolizes the eponymous river god Akragas.
