FRANCE, Science Bonté [Science Kindness], 1901, a uniface cast bronze plaque by A.-L.-M. Charpentier, three patients lying in hospital beds, the nearest one being examined by Dr Pierre Potain, 213 x 103mm, 499.36g (Maier 151; Storer 2866; cf. BDM I, 411; cf. DNW 150, 3155). Extremely fine and very rare £700-£900

Provenance: Bt J. Elsen March 2005.

Pierre-Carl-Édouard Potain (1825-1901), cardiovascular physician, renowned for his kindly bedside manner at the Hôpital de la Charitie in Paris. This plaque was designed to mark the retirement of Potain from practice in 1900, but he died before work on it was completed
