Ilkhan, Uljaytu (AH 703-716), Gold Presentation Quadruple-Dinar, Madinat al-Salam [Baghdad] AH709, 17.04g, 3h (Diler Ilhans Ul-364 but unrecorded in gold; cf Islamic Coin Auction 19, 25 April 2012, lot 141). NGC AU53, very rare.

NGC Certification 8534530-001.Provenance:Ex NGSA Auction 10, 3 December 2018, lot 88. In this sale it was said to be the coin sold by Baldwin's Auctions in Islamic Coin Auction 19, 25 April 2012, lot 141, but according to the published photograph, they are not the same coin. A footnote in the NGSA catalogue describes the background to the piece very well and we quote it here in translation here rather than trying to rephrase it:The son of the fourth Ilkhan Arghun and a Nestorian princess, Uljaytu was baptized. However, he converted to Shi'a Islam under the influence of one of his wives and made Shi'ism the official religion of Persia. Shi'a verses thus appear on his coins. This extremely rare multiple, minted in Baghdad, is a testament to Ilkhanic art at its zenith. It is likely a presentation piece intended to be presented to high-ranking officials or to be stored in the Khan's reserves. - NGSA Auction 10, 3 December 2018, lot 88.
