- Exceptional Near-Gem Long Whisker Dollar
(t) CHINA. Silver "Long Whisker Dragon" Dollar Pattern, Year 3 (1911). Tientsin Mint. Hsuan-t'ung (Xuantong [Puyi]). PCGS SPECIMEN-64.
L&M-29; K-223; KM-Pn304; WS-0040; Wenchao-105 (rarity: ★★★). Unadopted Variety with Outer Leaves Veined. In a collection brimming with RARITIES, this Long Whisker Dollar stands as perhaps the highest peak, coupling beauty in design, with RARITY and numismatic importance. Arising from the final year of the over 250-year Qing Dynasty, this Pattern represents a final attempt at a unified Qing coinage. Produced with a sublime artistry that is strongly associated with Chinese coinage, this type never made it to business strike production, with the imminent end of the Empire rendering its purpose moot.

The specimen surfaces are technically executed at an extremely advanced level, with the fine engraving of Luigi Giorgi boldly laid upon the flan. Touches of artful almond to goldenrod color provide pleasing flays of chromatic distinction. The open areas of the design display an alluring background, with a caparisoning appeal. Once the near-Gem grade level is reached, a new level of elusiveness is unlocked, with a mere four examples in this grade, and only one example surpassing this one at PCGS.

A similar Long Whisker Dollar, grading a slightly lesser Specimen-63+ realized a total price of $3,000,000 in our May 2022 auction. This comparative example suggests strong interest in acquiring a premium-graded piece, with prospective buyers seeking to add such an example, of fabled quality and pedigree, to their holdings. As such, the bounds of the estimate may prove unable to contain the final price realized by this lofty treasure of essentially indescribable importance and beauty.
