LEVANTINE REGION. Uncertain. Circa 1st century BC to 2nd century AD. Weight of 1 Mina (Lead, 77x83 mm, 458.00 g), Valerios Roufos, magistrate. ΕΠI - OYAΛЄPIOY POYΦOY Ladle (?). Rev. Blank. Unpublished and unique. A few minor bangs and scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
The object on the obverse of this interesting weight perhaps represents a ladle used to measure goods such as grain, certainly an appropriate symbol for a market weight. Where exactly it was produced is unclear, but the Roman name of the magistrate suggests a dating to the first centuries of the imperial period.
