Circa 5th-7th centuries. Weight of 1 Tremissis (?) (Bronze, 12x11 mm, 1.00 g). In upper half, monogram of A, P, Λ and N with crescent above A and star above N; in lower half, monogram of K, Δ and Є on the left and S on the right. Rev. Blank. Bendall -. CPAI -. MAH -. Pondera -. A highly unusual and enigmatic piece. Extremely fine.
This charming tiny weight is somewhat reminiscent of lots 2038-2039 above, indicating that the upper monogram denotes a name and the lower line an office. Unfortunately, this cataloguer cannot come up with a sensible reading of the monograms. Of particular interest are the unusual additions of a crescent and a star above the A and N in the upper monogram, the meaning of which is unknown.
