Rhine Legions. Anonymous, circa May/June-December 68. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.24 g, 4 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'S P Q R Group'. SALVS - GENERIS HVMANI Pax-Nemesis, winged, standing right, holding winged caduceus pointing down at snake in her left hand and holding out fold of drapery below chin with her right. Rev. S P Q R within oak wreath. BMC 30. CG 105.1 (this coin). Cohen 423. Martin 80. Nicolas 66 = 69. RIC 74. Extremely rare, one of only five known examples, three of which are in museums. A nicely toned and attractive coin. Somewhat rough and the obverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.
From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, privately acquired from Yves Gunzenreiner in March 2014.
The obverse type of this issue was copied from aurei and denarii of Claudius, but combined with the civil war legend SALVS GENERIS HVMANI. Three of the five known examples are in museums, so the two examples present in the Gollnow collection are the only ones in private hands.
