ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Wessex. Æthelstan. 924-939. AR Penny (24mm, 1.46 g, 3h). Small cross/Horizontal-Trefoil 1 (HT 1) type (BMC i). Uncertain mint (Hertford/Maldon?); Abonel, moneyer. + ÆÐELSTAN REX, small cross pattée / ABNEL/MONETA in two lines; three crosses pattée between, trefoils above and below. Cf. Blunt, Aethelstan 8 (different style); SCBI –; EMC–; North 668/1a; SCBC 1089. Good VF, area of cleaning scratches and very minor laminations on reverse. Very rare.
