LESBOS. Methymna. Caracalla, 198-217. Diassarion (Bronze, 23 mm, 8.27 g, 7 h), circa 210-217. [AV K M] AVP ANTΩNINO Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, seen from behind. Rev. MHΘVMNAIΩN Tyche standing front, head to left, holding rudder in her right hand and cornucopiae in her. CNG E-Auction 145 (2006), 48 = CNG E-Auction 344 (2015), 317 (same dies). Franke, Methymna -, cf. 24b (differing obverse legend). Extremely rare. The obverse struck slightly off center and somewhat rough surfaces, otherwise, good very fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
Methymna only very rarely issued Roman Provincial coins. Stylistically, our coin shows clear similarities to contemporary issues from Alexandria Troas, indicating that it was either struck there, or that the Methymnians ordered their dies from the much more important mint on the nearby mainland.
