LUCANIA. Sybaris III. 453-448 BC. Triobol (Silver, 10 mm, 1.29 g, 1 h). Bull standing to right. Rev. VM Bull walking to right. HN III 1748. Very rare. Toned and intriguing. Minor marks. Very fine.
From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, ex Classical Numismatic Group 60, 22 May 2002, 89 and Numismatica Ars Classica D, 2 March 1994, 1148.

This coin is so odd it would be easy to doubt if it weren't for the fact that a stater with the same types and fabric also exists! See the piece from the Golden Horn Collection, Stack's 12 January 2009, 2063.The only difference between that coin and ours, aside from the size and weight, is that the bull on the obverse is moving to the left and, on the reverse, the legend, also retrograde, reads ΜVΒΑ (I would very much like to thank Arturo Russo for reminding me of that coin).
