LUCANIA. Thourioi. Circa 215-207 BC. Unit (Bronze, 27 mm, 19.90 g, 9 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΘΟΥΡΙΩΝ Eagle, with spread wings, standing left on a thunderbolt. Garrucci pl. 107, 3. HN III 1933. Very rare. The types copy those of the Ptolemies, as was the case with earlier issues of Hieron II of Syracuse as well as earlier and contemporary coins of the Brettii. With a magnificent head of Zeus and a lovely mottled green patina. Some breaks in the patina, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, acquired from F. Kovacs in April 2002.
