In late summer 1756, lieutenant colonel John Armstrong lead a column of 300 Pennsylvania militiamen on an expedition in the west. Early on the morning of 8 September, he launched a surprise attack on the Lenape village of Kit-Han-Nee (Kittanning). Though the French-allied natives put up a stiff resistance, the settlement was sacked and burned to the ground. Armstrong considered the assault a success, and his men freed 11 prisoners and took 11 scalps. Other accounts differ, and this was likely a Pyrrhic victory, costing the colonel more men than.
Colonel Armstrong was hailed as a hero upon his return. The site was reoccupied by American settlers after the Revolution. When a new county was organized in the area in 1800, it took the name Armstrong County and placed its seat at Kittanning.
