DENMARK. 20 Ducats, 1788-DIA/MF. Altona / Poppenbüttel Mint. Christian VII. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
Off-strike in gold of Rigsdaler Courant struck for the personal use of the king and the crown prince. Fr-unlisted; KM-unlisted (cf. 645 in silver); Hede-25; Sieg-19; Schou-7a; FP-E5 and p. 338; Bruun-7894. Weight: 69.22 gms. Mintmaster: Michael Flor. Engraver: Daniel Jensen Adzer. The largest of all Danish / Norwegian gold coins ever minted and undeniably one of the most desirable of all in the L. E. Bruun collection. A magnific example of a truly imposing piece that will become the jewel in the crown of any collection of coins from the dual monarchy of Denmark-Norway. Unique in private hands. Only known in three examples, the present and two publicly owned examples in Trondheim and Oslo.

That the only two other existing examples rest in public collections in Norway points to the fact that this hefty gold piece were intended for presents / awards to especially important dignitaries whom the Crown Prince met on his visit to Norway. It is also quite likely that this particular example has in fact been in royal possession since it was first made. It was bequeathed to counsellor of state, Julius Gustav Berger Klemp (1813-1890), who had acted as executor of king Frederik VII's estate by his widow, countess Louise Danner.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.

Ex: J. G. B. Klemp Collection (Copenhagen - 1891) Lot # 397.

Estimate: €250000 - €350000
