Sigismund III Vasa was the son of Johan III and grandson of Gustav Vasa. Upon the death of his father he had already inherited the throne in Catholic Poland from his maternal grandfather. The Swedish Nobility was not keen on having a Catholic king, but with the Uppsala Resolution of 1594, which secured Protestantism throughout Sweden, he was allowed to take the throne. A devout Catholic, Sigismund blatantly disregarded the Resolution, however, and after a civil war he was officially deposed in 1599. He remained king of Poland and fought many wars till his death in 1632 - same year as his cousin, Gustav II Adolf of Sweden.
