SWEDEN. Elbing. Riksdaler, 1628. Elbing Mint. Gustav II Adolf. NGC AU Details--Obverse Spot Removed.
Dav-4565; KM-15; SB-13b; Delzanno-31; Hagander-96; Bruun auction-888; Bruun-11827. Weight 28.90 gms. Date on both sides. Mintmaster: Marsilius Philipsen. An impressive Riksdaler, with nice surfaces and only a minor imperfection as noted by NGC.

The Prussian city of Elbing (present day Poland) was under Swedish control 1626-1635 and again 1655-1660, and an extensive minting started in 1628. The higher denominations, however, are all rare and highly sought, especially in as beautiful a condition as this. The City arms with the two crosses were intentionally made to resemble that of Danzig in order to facilitate the acceptance of the coinage in Poland.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.

Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).

Ex: Fröling Collection (Stockholm - 1857), Lot# 246.

Estimate: €10000 - €15000
