SWEDEN. Strassburg. Ducat, 1632. Strassburg Mint. Gustav II Adolf. NGC AU-55.
Fr-3311(Stettin Mint); KM-unlisted; SB-1(unknown mint); SG-89; Hagander-142(unknown mint); Bruun Auction-973; Bruun-11885. Weight: 3.44 gms. Variation with 'FINLN'. Most appealing with bright luster and sharp details.

Previously linked to Stettin (Szczecin), recent studies now indicate this coinage was struck in Strassburg (French: Strasbourg) in 1633/34 as tribute to the Swedish army. The crossed pokers mintmark of the mintmaster of Strassburg, Johan Hermann, can be seen on the obverse under the shield. Truly a fascinating piece of history, this lustrous gold Ducat teaches us that discoveries still await us in numismatics.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.

Estimate: €2500 - €3000
