SWEDEN. Wolgast. 1/4 Taler, 1633. Wolgast Mint. Gustav II Adolf. NGC EF-40.
KM-69; SB-44(Erfurt); Delzanno-446; Bruun Auction-945; Bruun-11901. Weight: 7.07 gms. Mintmaster: Johan Schneider ("Weissmantel"). Possibly attributed to Erfurt. The obverse image of a vine growing out of a skull and crossbones is a symbol for life defeating death. Planchet flaws at rim, excellent original toning.

Johan Schneider worked in Erfurt, and for years the coin was believed to have been struck there. Recent studies indicate, however, that the dies were cut in Erfurt, taken to Wolgast, where they wore used to strike largesse money for the king's funeral procession.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.

Acquired in Amsterdam, 1852.

Estimate: €1000 - €1200
